Book-a-Book

Description

Through the Book-a-Book tool, the Support Centre for Inclusive Higher Education (SIHO), makes digital versions of textbooks easily available for students with disabilities studying in Flanders (Belgium). Book-a-Book is an initiative of SIHO in collaboration with the Flemish Government, KU Leuven Libraries Central Services and LIBIS, a service of the KU Leuven with more than forty years of experience in offering reliable, flexible and – at the same time – innovative solutions for libraries, archives and educational, research, heritage and public institutions.

For whom and why

Book-A-Book has been developed for students who need digital versions of textbooks, due to their disabilities. For example, for students with a visual impairment. Digital versions of textbooks can be used to use tools such as screen readers or the use of high contrasts or enlarging / adjusting text.

How does it work

  • Application form | Through a simple interface, students with a registered disability who are enrolled in a Flemish higher education institution can obtain a digital copy of their study books.
  • Login | Using your first name, last name and email address and without a password, you can register.
  • Approval | The higher education institution to which the student is affiliated does approve the application, if the student is entitled to the digital copy of the book. After that, the student will soon receive the book, if it’s available.

Pricing

The use of Book-A-Book is free of charge for students with disabilities in Flemish higher education. However, in order to request a digital study book, you must be able to provide proof of purchase of the hard copy of the book.
